Sony FX6 Cinematic LUTs: Mastering S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine
S-Log3: The Foundation of Your Grade
S-Log3 is Sony's most advanced logarithmic gamma curve, designed to capture the maximum amount of scene information. It maps scene luminance values to a flat, low-contrast image that preserves detail in both highlights and shadows. The challenge — and the opportunity — is that S-Log3 footage requires intentional color grading to look its best.
Sony's Color Science Nuances
Sony sensors have a distinctive color response that differs from ARRI, RED, and Blackmagic. Specifically, Sony cameras tend to render greens slightly differently, and skin tones can sometimes skew warm under mixed lighting conditions. LUTs designed for Sony's color science take these characteristics into account.
Common S-Log3 Grading Mistakes
- Overexposing before the LUT: S-Log3 is designed to be exposed at the recommended EI. Overexposing can cause issues that LUTs cannot fix.
- Applying LUTs without white balance correction: Always correct white balance before your creative LUT.
- Using non-Sony-specific LUTs: Generic log LUTs may not account for Sony's specific color science, leading to color shifts.
- Ignoring the S-Gamut3.Cine color space: For most projects, S-Gamut3.Cine provides the best starting point.
